Volkswagen do a decent ad, don't they? Do you all remember that one where they had a picture of a small car underneath a lot of words? Or that other one where they had a slightly bigger picture of another car with some different words? Yeah? Well it looks like they can have that same level of fun with the moving image, too.
Their latest spot, created by someone, shows a women being all frivolous and going on a load of dates with some strange man she's never met before. Because she's never met him, and probably believed all of the lies he put on his online dating profile, she has no idea how short he is and feels a bit silly walking next to him when it rains, or when there aren't any handily placed steps to stand on. All of this initial tension can only lead to bad vibes further down the relationship road, probably resulting in her cheating on him with a basketball player or something to compensate for years of laughter at her expense. "Look at that woman who's going out with a child!" people would say, before the child turns around to reveal he is actually a 30 something man who just never had a growth spurt at the recommended time. Imagine if he WAS a child; that'd be sick, but culturally relevant. Bill Roach, you swine. Fortunately this ad isn't sick, just a little depressing if you're anything less than 5ft 10" as, at the end, a much taller man turns up and sweeps the woman off her feet by showing how spacious his shiny VW is. Is that all woman want in a man? If so I have a really nice mountain bike that offers a tonne of space if you're willing to risk it sitting on my handlebars. If we crash and end up in A and E does that count as a date?
So well done, agency who made this ad. Not only have you not pissed off any copywriters, you've also proved a well known theory to be fact: Short men do not deserve love, or nice cars.
