The Best of Social Halloween.

Today is the 31st of October which means across the land social media managers have been rushing to get people to engage with specially designed Halloween content for their brands. Let's see who did it well and who should have listened to the harbinger of doom and left well alone.

SKITTLES

Skittles are really very good at social media. I'd like to do their work for them but unfortunately I'm not supposed to talk to children and am thus ruled out of interacting with the majority of their fan base. Here's what they did today:

These are quite nice, aren't they? There are a few of them up on their page and they're all equally simple and fun. But what I liked more than that was this video, which is mental.

CARLING

Carling are the opposite of Skittles, in the sense that they're absolutely bloody awful on social media. I would still enjoy doing their work for them because I would be confident that there was no way I could possibly do any worse. Today they kept up their trend of being useless by uploading this picture.

Boring, ey? While Skittles actually incorporated the product into their design and, with the video, thought of something completely different, Carling just thought they'd stick a pumpkin next to a pint. HILARIOUS.

SUBWAY

Subway took a cuter approach to Halloween by not strictly sticking to the horror angle. Instead they went with the costume angle and posted this picture of a baby in disguise as a sandwich. I hope no-one ate it, that would have been terrible.

See. It's a baby, but if I was hungry I probably wouldn't stop to check.

VIMTO

Vimto are amazing. The guy who used to do their social media is really talented and probably deserves a prize of some sorts. Anyway, Vimto want to be like Skittles and act a little bit crazy, but they can't just copy them because that would be cheating. Booo! So to seem a little odd without coming across as completely mental they made this picture.

Ah, Vimto bottle. I remember you fondly. You look very fetching in that bat costume. See Carling, you can mix your brand with horror in a more imaginative way. You can learn, I have faith in you.

And finally....

MCDONALD'S

In theory McDonald's should be amazing at social media because they own the whole entire world, but more often than not they fall behind in terms of creativity. Obviously that doesn't stop thousands of people from liking their updates because their brains are so clogged up with fat they have no idea what they're even thinking anymore. At the time of looking at today's update it had only been up for 2 minutes. Here it is:

It has already got 1814 likes, 113 shares and 62 comments. It's a Big Mac with a chicken on top, which makes naff all sense yet still everyone loves it. What do I know? Obviously putting a chicken head on top of a beef burger is the right way to go.

Of course a lot of brands didn't bother with anything particularly Halloween themed today. Some might think they're too upper class, some might have forgotten what day it is and others I just couldn't be bothered to look at. Hey ho, next up is Bonfire night. I'm expecting Skittles to burn the sky down, a baby dressed up as a firework and Carling to just put a pint over a background image of some sparklers. Exciting!
